The Maui Police Department on Saturday identified a pedestrian killed in a car crash as 24-year-old Mateo Stephens of Kula.
Stephens was walking southbound on the asphalt shoulder of Hana Highway, 0.1 mile north of Hansen Road in Kahului, when he was hit by a white 1995 Chevrolet Camaro traveling southbound on the shoulder at about 7:41 p.m. Thursday, according to police.
Stephens sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested the 71-year-old driver of the Chevrolet for second-degree negligent homicide but he was later released pending investigation.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has still not been determined.
